The 83rd Annual Academy Awards Picks

There are few things I enjoy in life more than a good movie.  I am always fascinated by the Oscars and their selection process as they always seem to choose the artsy, period piece movies over the big budget summer spectaculars that most of America relates to and thinks should win.

There is no way in hell it will happen, but Christopher Nolan deserves to get two awards, best Screenplay and Best Picture.  Robbed of a Director nomination, Inception deserves these awards because it is an original idea.  One thing I can not stand about the movie industry lately is all the remakes and rehashes of old ideas and films.  Nolan should be rewarded for his unique idea and ability to direct a star studded cast.  It is easy to handle actors who are young (The Social Network) or seasoned veterans who never quite hit it big (The King's Speech).  Being able to direct DiCpario, Paige, and Gordon-Levitt to exceptional performances is something that should be rewarded.  It is a shame that he is robbed of these nominations on a continuous basis because his movies are unfairly lumped into the summer blockbuster fodder by the Academy.  If you watch films you know that there is a distinct difference between films such as Inception and The Dark Knight, and Transformers and Iron Man.

Best Picture- The King's Speech - The Academy eats up movies like this.  No brainer in what should be a huge night for everyone involved in this film.

Actor in a Leading Role - Colin Firth, The King's Speech - Lock.  His performance was incredible.

Actor in a Supporting Role - Christian Bale, The Fighter - A lot of late noise that Geoffrey Rush could steal this one, but Bales performance was his, "I can perform roles in films other than "summer blockbusters" so fuck off."

Actress in a Leading Role - Natalie Portman, Black Swan - When people hear about a movie and find out its about a ballerina they usually write it off.  It's unfortunate if you did that with this film.

Actress in a Supporting Role - Melissa Leo, The Fighter - I would love to see Hailee Steinfeld win this, as she deserves to be nominated in the Leading Role category (she carries True Grit) but it will no doubt go to Melissa, who totally transformed herself for this role.

Animated Feature Film - Toy Story 3 - In my opinion the best film of 2010, Toy Story 3 will cap off it's incredible run with a well deserved Oscar.

Art Direction - Robert Stromberg & Karen O'Hara, Alice in Wonderland - The overall product might have been an all time stinker, but the art was beautiful to look at.

Cinematography - Roger Deakins, True Grit - Making a western look natural in todays age of green screen and special effects is a challenge, one that Roger and company successfully completed.

Costume Design - Mary Zophres, True Grit - Could be stolen by The King's Speech but True Grit looked as authentic as a western should.

Directing - Tom Hooper, The King's Speech - It's a King's Speech year.

Documentary Feature - Inside Job - This was the only nominated documentary I have seen.  Very detailed look into the goons who run Wall Street and get rich off of everyone else's money.

Film Editing - The Social Network - Several variables and characters were brought together to make the story of FaceBook something that people not interested in the topic could enjoy.

Makeup - No idea. If I had to guess I would say The Wolfman, but I doubt Academy members saw that film.

Music (Original Score) -The Social Network - The score to this film played perfectly with everything involved in the film.  I get the feeling The King's Speech might steal this one though.

Music (Original Song) - We Belong Together, Toy Story 3 - Has to win.

Short Film (Animated) - Day & Knight - Saw this with Toy Story, should ride its momentum to a win.

Sound Editing - Richard King, Inception - The dream sequences, the worlds collapsing, all sounded as if you were in the world with the characters.

Sound Mixing - Ren Klyce, David Parker, Michael Semanick and Mark Weingarten, The Social Network - All the locations in which this film that emphasized dialog took place in were done wonderfully.

Visual Effects - Paul Franklin, Chris Corbould, Andrew Lockley and Peter Bebb, Inception - If you happened to see this movie on Blu-Ray, you'll agree with this pick.  Amazing visuals throughout the entire film.

Writing (Adapted Screenplay) - The juggernaut that was The Social Network got derailed at the SAG Awards by The King's Speech and has all but been forgotten.  Aaron Sorkin did a brilliant job of making a film that relied heavily on dialog enjoyable and watchable.  This may very well be The Social Network's only award.

Writing (Original Screenplay) - David Seidler, The King's Speech - This award should hands down go to Christopher Nolan, but much like my chances at playing for the New York Yankees, there is no way it will happen.  Again, it's The King's Speech year.

Foreign Language Film - Did not see any of these films.

Short Film (Live Action) - Did not see any of these films.

Documentary Short Subject - Did not see any of these films.
